Who We Are:
Join the Surface Engineering and Materials Chemistry Section, within the Materials Engineering Department as a Summer Intern! Our group applies coatings or surface treatments to enhance the optical, chemical, electrical, mechanical, or structural properties of a components. As a member of the team, you will help develop creative solutions for existing and next-generation technologies for both government and industry clients. You will have the opportunity to work with scientists and engineers who are experts in their fields and gain exposure to a diverse array of projects and technologies.
Objectives of this Role:
- Work alongside engineering staff to perform experiments in material synthesis and characterization, thin film coating fabrication, process optimization and development.
- Be a solution-oriented problem solver that exercises creativity and independent judgement in determining approaches to solve a wide range of technical problems.
- Learn new technical skills to complete project work and develop new materials and processes.
- Get exposed to a variety of projects and real world technical problems.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- Assists with building components, subunits, models, and adaptations of standard equipment.
- Performs experiments; documents in lab notebook, interprets data to determine pass/fail criteria for next steps
- Hands-on work in laboratory environments.
- Quickly learn chemical and material synthesis processes.
