ABOUT THE POSITIONThis is entry level medical technology work performing diagnostic laboratory tests in the analysis of human tissue and body fluids in a clinical laboratory. An employee in this class performs a variety of standardized laboratory tests in a variety of fields, which include clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, urinalysis, and hematology. Work may include providing technical guidance or training to laboratory staff. Work is performed under the general direction of a technical supervisor.
Minimum Training, Education & Experience
The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Candidates must meet requirements within 30 days after the last date for filing applications.
EDUCATION
1. Option 1
Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry and/or Biochemistry.
OR
2. Option 2
Current certification in one of the following:
- Medical Technologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT), orby the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as:- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or- Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT), or- Chemistry , or- Hematology (H), or- Microbiology (M), or- by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA), or- in a closely related area by Health Education and Welfare (HEW) or equivalent national certifying agency
Physical & Medical Requirements
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
Required Licenses & Certifications
Certification in one of the areas listed in the minimum education and training section above within six months of appointment as a Medical Technologist 1. Failure to obtain certification will delay promotion to the Medical Technologist 2 class.Note: Certification will not be required for employees who have permanent status in this class on February 1, 2011.
