Senior / Lead Controls Field Service Engineer - Turbomachinery
Basis North America is seeking highly experienced Senior and Lead Controls Field Service Engineers for project-based assignments involving gas turbines, steam turbines, centrifugal compressors, generators, turboexpanders, and associated auxiliary systems.
The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with GE Speedtronic control systems and a proven background leading installation, commissioning, startup, maintenance, outage, troubleshooting, and control-system upgrade activities in LNG, power generation, oil and gas, petrochemical, and offshore facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead control-system installation, pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities.
- Perform UCP pre-power-up inspections, grounding verification, power-up, initial software downloads, and network integration.
- Conduct loop checks, instrument calibration, functional tests, cause-and-effect testing, dynamic testing, run tests, and startup support.
- Configure, troubleshoot, and modify Speedtronic Mark V, Mark VI, Mark VIe, and Mark VIeS control systems.
- Diagnose turbine trips, alarms, control-sequence issues, communication failures, and instrumentation problems.
- Perform HMI configuration, screen customization, alarm management, and control-logic modifications.
- Troubleshoot control valves, variable inlet guide vanes, transmitters, probes, wiring, vibration monitoring systems, fire and gas systems, and turbine auxiliaries.
- Support combustion inspections, hot gas path inspections, major overhauls, outages, recommissioning, and equipment upgrades.
- Provide technical direction to field teams, contractors, operators, and customer personnel.
- Review P&IDs, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, control narratives, technical specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Prepare commissioning documentation, technical reports, maintenance procedures, and progress updates.
- Ensure compliance with OEM procedures, contractual requirements, quality standards, and site safety regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 15 years of controls, instrumentation, or commissioning experience involving turbines and rotating equipment, with extensive experience in senior or lead field positions.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, Instrumentation, Controls, Power Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Extensive hands-on experience with:
- Speedtronic Mark V, Mark VI, Mark VIe, and/or Mark VIeS.
- Toolbox and Cimplicity HMI.
- Gas turbine commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Loop checks, instrument calibration, functional testing, and cause-and-effect testing.
- Control-system software downloads, network configuration, and logic modifications.
- Field instrumentation, auxiliary systems, and control-panel commissioning.
- Proven experience as a Senior Controls FSE, Lead Controls FSE, Controls Supervisor, Resident Controls Engineer, or Lead Commissioning Engineer.
- Ability to work independently and provide technical leadership during critical commissioning and startup activities.
- Strong English communication skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel for domestic and international assignments.
Relevant Equipment Experience
Candidates should have experience with several of the following:
- GE Frame 5, Frame 6, Frame 7, and Frame 9 heavy-duty gas turbines.
- PGT25, LM2500, LM2500+, and LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbines.
- Steam turbines and turbine protection systems.
- BCL and MCL centrifugal compressors.
- Turboexpanders and antisurge control systems.
- Gas turbine generators and synchronous motors.
- Combined-cycle power plants and HRSG systems.
- Bently Nevada vibration monitoring and System 1.
- GE Fanuc, Allen-Bradley, SANCO PLC, OptiComp, VSD, and VSDS systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Electrical, Controls, or Power Engineering.
- OEM training on Mark V, Mark VI, Mark VIe, or Mark VIeS.
- DLN tuning and combustion-system experience.
- PLC programming and turbine-protection logic design.
- Experience with inverters, power electronics, or battery energy storage systems.
- Experience providing technical training to operators and maintenance personnel.
- LNG, combined-cycle, petrochemical, offshore platform, or gas-compression experience.
- Valid TWIC, BOSIET, HUET, MIST, H2S, or equivalent offshore safety certifications.
- Previous experience working on international commissioning and startup assignments.
