Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Assembly Application Engineer to join our engineering team at HELU USA, a leading manufacturer of electrical cables, wire harnesses, and custom cable assemblies. In this role, you will serve as the critical link between product design and production—translating customer specifications, engineering concepts, and electrical schematics into fully dimensioned, production-ready assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) prior to the start of any manufacturing run. Your drawings will directly drive cut lists, crimp operations, connectorization, and final assembly on the shop floor.
Key Responsibilities
Drawing & Documentation Ownership
- Create and maintain 2D and 3D assembly drawings for cable assemblies, wire harnesses, and electromechanical sub-assemblies using SolidWorks, AutoCAD Electrical, and/or Creo (Pro/ENGINEER).
- Produce detailed wire harness layout drawings showing routing paths, branch points, breakouts, grommets, strain reliefs, conduit, and protective sleeving (e.g., braided sleeving, convoluted tubing, heat-shrink).
- Generate schematic-to-assembly wiring diagrams, including connector pinouts, terminal identification, wire color/coding tables, and signal/power assignments.
- Apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to all dimensional drawings; ensure tolerancing reflects manufacturing capability and assembly stack-up.
- Manage the engineering revision and ECN (Engineering Change Notice) process, including drawing revision blocks, change-logs, and distribution control in line with ISO 9001 / AS9100 (as applicable).
- Author and release supporting documentation: BOMs, cable cut lists, wire lists, connector spec sheets, and assembly work instructions.
Assembly Production Liaison & DFM
- Review drawings for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) before release to production; collaborate with manufacturing engineering to optimize routings, minimize crimp operations, reduce wire length waste, and improve first-pass yield.
- Partner with the production floor, quality, and purchasing teams to resolve drawing-related questions, clarify tolerances, and incorporate feedback into subsequent revisions.
- Validate that every drawing references the correct connector part numbers, terminals, seals, and accessories qualified in our approved vendor list (AVL).
Standards & Compliance
- Ensure all assemblies conform to applicable industry standards, including:
- IPC/WHMA-A-620 (Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies)
- UL Standards (e.g., UL 2464, UL 758, AWM styles) and CSA equivalents
- NEC / NFPA 79 for machinery and industrial cables where applicable
- RoHS / REACH material compliance
- Customer-specific standards (e.g., aerospace, automotive, medical device) as required
- Specify crimp specifications, pull-force requirements, and torque values for terminated connections and reference approved crimp tooling (e.g., Applicator, Mini-Air, Daniels Manufacturing).
Customer & Cross-Functional Interface
- Interpret customer drawings, schematics, and technical data packages into manufacturable assemblies.
- Support engineering change requests (ECRs) and RMA/RTV investigations by performing drawing-level root cause analysis.
- Occasionally provide technical clarification to customers regarding assembly feasibility, conductor sizing (AWG/mm²), shielding, jacketing, and connector selection.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related technical field — or equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience.
- 3+ years of experience producing engineering drawings in a manufacturing environment; cable, wire harness, or electromechanical assembly experience strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in at least one major CAD platform: SolidWorks, Creo, or Autodesk Inventor, plus working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical.
- Solid working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and standard drafting practices.
- Familiarity with wire processing specifications, including AWG/mm² conductor sizing, insulation types, stranding, and voltage/current ratings.
- Working knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620, UL wire/cable standards, and connector systems (e.g., Molex, TE Connectivity, Amphenol, Deutsch, JST, Harting).
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems for BOM entry and revision control (e.g., SAP, or similar).
- Strong attention to detail; ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, customer specifications, and reference designators
Preferred Skills
- Experience with harness board layout software (e.g., Zuken E3, Harness Expert, CADi) or EPLAN.
- Knowledge of UL, CSA, CE, and military/aerospace cable specifications (e.g., MIL-DTL-38999, AS50881).
- Hands-on background on the shop floor—crimping, soldering, wire processing, or harness building—is a strong plus.
- Experience with PLM systems (e.g., SolidWorks PDM, Windchill, Teamcenter) for document control.
- Basic understanding of electrical test requirements (continuity, hi-pot, insulation resistance) and how these translate to drawing callouts

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
