What You'll Do
Reporting to the Manager of Architecture within the AEC - Architecture & Engineering division, you will:
- Provide design management for renovation projects of existing campus buildings including classroom, office and research/laboratory space, student housing, athletics and recreational sports, forensic exteriors, and food service projects. Develop and manage the project scope, schedule, and cost estimates. Project studies or designs may be self-performed or by a third-party consultant. You'll serve as the discipline or project lead.
- Partner with key stakeholders including facility managers, faculty, administrators, and facility operations groups to develop and meet project goals. Coordinate with the Manager of Architecture and office leadership to determine resource allocation needs and to provide project updates. Direct and support architectural, engineering, interior design team members, and consultants.
- Prepare study reports, planning; design, and construction documents for leading self-performed architectural; engineering projects. Tasks include building condition assessments, space planning layouts, construction drawings and specifications, and selecting equipment. Coordinate the design process with other disciplines and U-M partners.
- Draft standards and technical specifications, including the development of department-wide design guidelines, and operating procedures.
- Manage and coordinate consultant activities to ensure completion of the project requirements, including the scope, schedule, and budget goals for studies or designs by third-party consultants. Develop proposal requests, set up contracts for services, and review payment invoices.
- Perform field surveys in multiple building spaces to document existing conditions and to understand potential building-related interferences. Assess the condition and performance of systems and components. Develop recommendations for alterations to buildings and spaces based on the findings of field surveys and evaluations.
- Coordinate anticipated construction activities with construction management team members and communicate with stakeholders during the design phase. Review and evaluate contract bids and make recommendations on contract awards.
- Participate in interview committees, mentor, and help guide architectural support staff members.

Required Qualifications*
- Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience developing design details for institutional/higher education buildings.
- A Registered Architect in Michigan, or NCARB registered in another State and can obtain registration the State of Michigan within 6 months.
- Construction observation experience.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
- Experience in AutoCAD and Revit. Experience in Microstation a plus.
- Experience applying Michigan Building Code, State of Michigan Bureau of Fire Safety rules, ADA standards for Accessible Design, and Michigan Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings.
