Hydraulic Test Engineer Job Description
A: Purpose and Scope:
The Hydraulic Test Engineer will serve as a technical lead for the hydraulic overhaul and test services, working closely with management to understand, define, and prioritize test scope/need dates of overhaul components from multiple customer organizations. You will oversee the companies hydraulic overhaul and test equipment verifying it is calibrated, maintained, and available as the need arises. Most importantly, you will drive process improvement, by capturing process/equipment gaps and working with management/others to facilitate resolution.
You will author and maintain detailed Work Instructions, perform test readiness reviews and pre-test briefings, and conduct data reviews to verify the success of the test operations. You will work closely with customers to identify test requirements, with the Engineering Manager and Production Manager to incorporate tests into the appropriate test stands, and with technicians to execute the test procedures. You will identify the test fixtures, test support equipment, and data acquisition systems required to execute the testing scope. Above all else, you will maintain a high standard of quality and prioritize the safety of you and your coworkers.
B. Responsibilities:
- Build, support, and partner with a diverse team to ensure test methods meet all applicable requirements and regulations.
- Author, update, and review/approve work instructions.
- Technical owner for numerous expensive, complex pieces of fabrication and test equipment.
- Develop documentation packages; educate and/or train other engineers and technicians on new or modified tooling and/or processes.
- Install new tooling, equipment, etc. as-needed for new programs and customers.
- Interface with other engineers, subject matter experts, and technicians to solve production challenges.
- Design and implement tooling and test solutions, enabling high quality build of MAA hardware.
- Quickly resolve non-conformances and work with the Quality team to implement root cause corrective actions.
- Help to identify, plan, and execute capital equipment, machine, and layout upgrades to the meet volume production demand.
- Create technical documentation as required by MAA processes, or as required by customer directive.
- Maintain work records in accordance with MAA standard practices and guidance, and the MAA FAA Repair Station Manual.
- Support equipment calibration and maintenance requirements
C. Organizational Relationships:
The Hydraulic Test Engineer reports directly to the MAA Engineering Manager.
D. Essential Skills and Experience:
- Experience with the build and test of pneumatic, hydraulic, and structural assemblies
- Experience with test equipment (pumps, valves, heaters, instrumentation, data acquisition, and automation)
- Experience with scientific computer science languages (Python, MATLAB, or similar)
- Experience with fluid and electrical system simulation and automation testing
- Experience data reduction and post-processing tools
- Mechanical component and/or tooling design and analysis (3D computer-aided design)
- Knowledge of metallic manufacturing techniques, processes, and equipment related to machining, welding, drilling, and automation
- Experience with process development from R&D to high-volume manufacturing
- Experience writing work instructions and procedures for critical aerospace parts
- Experience in a production environment within the aerospace industry
E. Typical Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelors degree or higher in an Engineering discipline, preferably Mechanical, Aerospace or Manufacturing Engineering.
- 5+ years of recent experience designing hydraulic components, ideally in aerospace or equivalent type mechanical system elements within aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles
- Strong mechanical design and integration skills using 3D modeling tools
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
F. Additional Requirements:
- This is a hands-on position that may require standing for up to 4 hours a day and working directly with hardware on the floor
- Must be comfortable stooping, bending, and standing
- Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends when necessary
- Ability to read and interpret technical data both in the form of drawings, and technical orders from a variety of military and civilian sources.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.

- Knowledge of established aviation maintenance, overhaul and repair practices.

H. Status:
This is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is not subject to the requirements of DOT 49 CFR Part 40, and FAA 14 CFR Part 120 Drug and Alcohol Policy.
