What You’ll Do At LIPA
The Senior Engineer, Asset Management is responsible for providing advanced engineering expertise and performance measurement of LIPA’s assets on its electrical infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective performance.
Reporting directly to the Vice President, Transmission and Distribution Utility and Program Performance, this role emphasizes collaboration with the service provider to deliver high-quality asset management programs and strategies, substation design and control systems recommendations, maintenance protocols and equipment reliability, and testing and commissioning.
The Senior Engineer will serve as a technical authority, reviewing and guiding projects, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations, and aligning work with LIPA’s long-term system planning and grid modernization goals.
The Senior Engineer will:
- Act as the primary LIPA technical liaison for asset related concerns with a strong focus on substation, transmission, and distribution equipment.
- Foster strong collaboration with the service provider to ensure issues are resolved efficiently and establish effective working relationships.
- Review capital projects with a focus on assets identified, need, application, and compatibility with LIPA’s long term system strategy.
- Evaluate the development and review of substation layouts, equipment specifications, protection and control schemes, and system integration.
- Support the Vice President Transmission and Distribution Utility and Program Performance in ensuring that LIPA’s electric asset infrastructure meets long-term system planning and reliability needs, including but not limited to compliance with asset management program Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) maintenance schedules focusing on asset life extension.
- Monitor execution of projects by the service provider, including schedule, budget, and technical quality, and escalate concerns when necessary.
- Participate in and oversee system studies related to substation performance including but not limited to understanding results, evaluating recommendations, suggesting alternatives, while considering reliability, and integration with transmission and distribution networks.
- Provide subject matter expertise (SME) on substation equipment (e.g., transformers, breakers, relays, control systems) and emerging technologies to effectively evaluate system performance, recommendations, maintenance plans, and life cycle repairs.
- Collaborate closely with various stakeholders including the service provider (i.e., transmission, distribution, substation, operations, and planning) and external partners to ensure projects are fully coordinated and properly executed.
- Support emergency response and restoration efforts by providing technical guidance and coordinating with the service provider during outages and system events.
- Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
What We Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Seven (7) years of progressive experience in utility engineering, with emphasis on power distribution, substation, field assets, operations, protective relaying and electrical equipment.
- Must have demonstrated field experience.
- Demonstrated experience with asset management programs and equipment life extension.
- In depth knowledge of electric utility design, equipment specifications, and industry best practice
- Knowledge of substation equipment, operation and maintenance is required.
- Familiarity with asset management programs, associated maintenance and long-term strategies to maximize equipment life expectancies.
- Strong oversight and project management skills, including the ability to evaluate deliverables, track progress, drive improved performance and hold external partners accountable.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements (NESC, IEEE, ANSI, NERC).
- Strong data analytic skills.
- Ability to analyze dashboard data for evaluation purposes.
- Must be fluent in use of Microsoft Excel analysis tools and reporting functions and Powerpoint proficiency.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present technical information to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across internal teams and with external service providers and consultants.
- Awareness of emerging utility industry technologies.
- Self-motivated, self-directed, detail oriented, and able to balance multiple priorities with minimal oversight.
- Must have the ability to understand electrical utility schematics.
What We Want (Preferred Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in power systems.
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
- Experience overseeing outsourced engineering functions, project managers and/or schedulers in a utility setting.
- Knowledge of advanced monitoring systems, automation, protection and controls, and Asset Management Programs.
- Experience with communications from field/substations that support Supervisory Control And Data Acquisitions (SCADA) inputs.
- Proven experience working collaboratively with service providers, contractors, or consultants to deliver high-quality engineering outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience establishing transmission and distribution standards.
- Experience with engineering and design software (AutoCAD, ETAP/PSSE, or equivalent) preferred.
Salary Range
$144,000 - $176,000
