Photo-Sonics, Inc. is an international leader in state-of-the-art optical tracking systems in Chatsworth and has an immediate opening for a Senior Mechanical Engineer. We're seeking an experienced, self-motivated engineer who can both design hands-on and lead others through a project.
Working closely with the Chief Engineer, the Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the design and development of electro-mechanical and optical systems, serving as project lead on assigned programs — setting technical direction, coordinating design task assignments and schedules across a cross-functional engineering team, and mentoring other engineers — while remaining hands-on through all phases of product development from concept to release, including mechanical design proposals, requirements definitions, complex design specifications, and system-level analysis.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
● Serve as project lead for assigned mechanical design programs, setting technical direction and coordinating task assignments, schedules, and design reviews across a cross-functional engineering team
● Lead product design through the full project lifecycle, from initial concept through systems analysis, planning, and execution within program budget and timelines
● Create new designs and implement design improvements across product lines
● Coordinate design reviews to ensure designs meet customer functional and performance requirements
● Develop mechanical designs to meet high quality standards and ease of manufacturing, assembly, and test
● Establish and maintain department technical standards, design guidelines, and the mechanical design lifecycle review process and gates
● Ensure work products are in compliance with engineering practices, procedures, and standards
● Develop mechanical system designs using SolidWorks; support mechanical system modeling and analysis (thermal, stress) as required
● Identify and help develop processes, tools, and best practices to build the department's knowledge base
● Provide technical guidance and serve as a mentor to mid-career and junior mechanical engineers
● Collaborate with systems and electrical engineering teams on acceptance, qualification, and factory test planning, procedures, and assembly methodology
● Assure system and product quality through design validation, verification, and testing
● Support product transition to Operations and sustaining engineering efforts
● Interface with customers and development teams, as well as external contractors, in multi-contractor environments
● Support outsourcing analysis and make-vs-buy decisions
● Position may require occasional travel
● Perform other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as assigned
Requirements:
Education:
● Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university
Experience:
● 10+ years of mechanical design and development experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
● Demonstrated experience leading product development engineering teams, and mentoring other engineers
● Demonstrated experience designing, analyzing, and delivering precision mechanical assemblies and electro-mechanical systems
● Proven ability to lead product design activities through all phases of a project, from initial concept design through systems analysis/engineering, planning/execution, and reviews
● Experience serving in a project lead or technical lead capacity — setting technical direction and coordinating the work of a design team
● Familiarity with full product lifecycle activities: development, integration, test, and troubleshooting
● Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance (active clearance not required)
Desired Skills:
● Design and development of high-precision mechanical systems as part of opto-electro-mechanical assemblies
● Familiar with static and dynamic kinematic analysis and load determination
● Packaging of electronics boards, harnessing, and COTS electronics components for harsh (vibration, thermal) environments and tight packaging constraints
● Incorporation of Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) products into mechanical designs as required
● Demonstrated ability to develop and review component drawings utilizing GD&T per ASME Y14.5
● Demonstrated ability to perform tolerance stack-up calculations
● Mechanical system modeling and analysis including thermal and structural stress
● Familiarity with thermal analysis and heat transfer principles for electronics packaging
● Use of SolidWorks Simulation tools for system and component-level analysis
● Proficiency with SolidWorks for design, drafting, and configuration management; SolidWorks PDM a plus
● Creation of engineering drawings including component drawings, assembly drawings, and associated documentation
● Knowledge of engineering change control processes (ECNs) and revision management
● Compliance with AS9100 quality management standards and ITAR requirements
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills
● Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills
Preferred Skills:
● Experience with imaging camera and lens optical system mechanical and system integration
● Experience with deployment of mobile systems in rugged or field environments
● Knowledge of thermal management techniques for electronics in aerospace and defense packaging
● Familiarity with military test range environments and field operations
● Experience in multi-contractor development programs
● Familiarity with vibration analysis and mechanical system behavior in position control systems
● Experience auditing internal programs or external suppliers to identify best practices and improvement opportunities
Physical Requirements include:
● This position requires the ability to walk, sit, talk and hear, stand, and use hands to reach, handle, or feel.
● Occasional climbing or balancing may be required in lab or field environments
Position may require the ability to lift up to 15 lbs., stand, walk for long periods of time
