POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Data Engineer at Chesapeake is responsible for leading the design, development, and operationalization of enterprise data pipelines, Lakehouse architectures, and curated data warehouse assets. This role delivers secure, scalable, and high-quality data products using Azure and Databricks to enable analytics, reporting, and data-driven decision-making, including support of Chesapeake’s multi-state growth and expansion initiatives.
Serving as a senior individual contributor and technical leader, the Senior Data Engineer defines and enforces data engineering standards, ensures security and governance best practices, and mentor’s members of the data team on modern Lakehouse patterns and the Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Owns the technical design and long-term evolution of enterprise data pipelines, lakehouse architecture, and curated data warehouse structures supporting analytics and reporting across the organization.
- Leads architectural decision-making for Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, and Azure Data Lake Storage, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with business growth and multi-state operational requirements.
- Defines, governs, and continuously improves Medallion data pattern, including standards for data ingestion, transformation, modeling, and data quality enforcement.
- Serves as the final technical authority for SQL-based transformations, dimensional data models, and data pipeline design, conducting design reviews and approving production changes.
- Owns production data reliability, including monitoring strategy, alerting standards, and incident response; leads root cause analysis and remediation for recurring or high-impact data issues.
- Establishes and enforces engineering standards for version control, CI/CD pipelines, testing, documentation, and release management across the data engineering function.
- Implements and oversees data security controls, including role-based access control (RBAC), encryption, and secure data handling practices, in partnership with security, infrastructure, and compliance teams.
- Designs and governs secure data access patterns for Power BI semantic models and downstream data consumers, ensuring consistent, role-appropriate access to trusted datasets.
- Provides technical mentorship and coaching to data engineers and analytics team members, raising overall team capability through design guidance, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
- Partners with business leaders, product owners, and analytics stakeholders to translate strategic objectives into scalable data solutions and prioritized engineering initiatives.
- Balances strategic platform initiatives with operational responsibilities, ensuring day-to-day pipeline stability while advancing the organization’s long-term data architecture.
- Documents and communicate architectural decisions, reusable patterns, and best practices, ensuring clarity, consistency, and continuity across the data ecosystem.
- Implements data security best practices in pipelines, including encryption, secure credentials management, and adherence to company data standards.
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives; adheres to departmental policies, procedures, quality, and safety standards, and consistently exhibits Chesapeake’s Values and Behaviors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering or data warehousing roles.
- Expert SQL skills and dimensional data modeling experience.
- Advanced experience with Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, and Azure Data Lake Storage.
- Awareness of data security principles and compliance requirements (e.g., encryption, RBAC, secure data handling).
- 1-2 years experience using Python for data transformations.
- Strong background in cloud security, data access controls, and encryption.
- Experience supporting Power BI and enterprise analytics platforms.
- Proficiency with Git, CI/CD, and automated deployment pipelines.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the teammate is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities are required, which includes close vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
