Nuclear Research Scientist for the Energy Transition Location: Schlumberger-Doll Research (SDR), Cambridge MA, United States
Status: Full Time / Immediate
Job description: Schlumberger-Doll Research (SDR) seeks a nuclear physicist with a passion for modeling to drive the Energy Transition. Nuclear measurements are among the most important techniques for characterization of the Earth's subsurface. Building on many decades of expertise, SLB develops the hardware and algorithms that deliver in-situ measurements deep underground. Our technologies appear in all aspects of the ongoing Energy Transition - from CO2 Storage to Critical Minerals to safe abandonment of fossil fuels - and nuclear science is an essential part of the portfolio.
As a member of our multidisciplinary team, you will have a key role in developing new models and algorithms that use nuclear physics to solve real-world problems. You will provide the physical understanding and computing skills to take advantage of nuclear measurements within diverse datasets. This full-time Research Scientist position is embedded in the Geosciences department at SDR, where we combine expertise in geophysical, mathematical, computational, and engineering sciences. Our projects address the technical challenges and global market needs for the emerging sectors of Decarbonization and the Energy Transition. Extensive datasets and computing infrastructure are available on the premises and in the cloud. As a successful member of our team, you will work with experts locally and across the company to create nuclear models, extract new insights from nuclear measurements, and integrate your algorithms in commercial solutions.
Scientists are encouraged to publish research results, present work at conferences, and file for patent protection.
Minimum qualification & experience - Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or related fields, with courses and preferably thesis work related to modeling and analysis of nuclear data.
- Strong interest in physical simulations and interpretation of data. You thrive on the combination of science and computing to extract insights. Experience with MCNP or Geant is preferred.
- Fluency with programming languages such as Python, Matlab, C++, or similar. Experience with machine learning and data science is an advantage.
- Demonstrated problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. You are enthusiastic and work well in a team of scientists and engineers.
- Authorization to reside and work in the US, with relocation to the Greater Boston/Cambridge area.
